Nikola Gaidarov is virtuoso kaval player who represents the new generation of folk musicians, creating his own high energy style of playing.

Nikola Gaidarov is one of Bulgaria’s top kaval (authentic wooden flute) players and born into a family of professional folk musicians from Kazanlak, a city in the Thracian region, known for the Valley of Roses and rose oil production. He represents the new generation of highly-skilled young artists, creating his own innovative and high energy style of playing that never abandons tradition. A graduate of the Kotel Folk Music High School and the Plovdiv Academy of Music, Dance, and Fine Arts, Nikola moved to the U.S. in 2011 following studies in Jazz improvisation at the Royal College of Music in Stockholm, Sweden. An active performer, he was invited to play with Grammy award winner Paul Winter for his 17th annual Summer Solstice Celebration in Manhattan, New York. Since his recent arrival in Toronto, Nikola has performed with Anton Apostolov’s Green Sky Project and can be heard on Ahmet Ihvani’s forthcoming album. He also was part of “Balkan Duende” concert in the Fall of 2016 at the Glenn Gould Studio which was a collaboration between performers such as Ontario based musician Anton Apostolov, world known percussionist Stoyan Yankoulov and Toronto-based guitarist/world stringed instruments specialist, versed in Jazz, World and Traditional music Levon Ichkhanian.
